What a great collection of books to read this month. Thumbs up to "Death Ship" by Traven. Excellent choice. You won't be disappointed.

I'm half way through it and loving it.

I resonate with what you wrote about needing to shift from 'AI systems designer' mode to 'storyteller' mode. What if a deep understanding of narrative structures from classic literature could actually enhance ethical AI developement?

I haven't read any of Ocean Vuong's books, but I did enjoy Tom Crewe's piece about his latest one in the LRB: https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v47/n11/tom-crewe/my-hands-in-my-face. That's what reviews ought to be!

Intrigued by the Mary Shelley story, which I'd never heard of.

Regarding the Stoker one... it should have all the trigger warnings. The very thought of it gives me a shudder.

The Stoker one has a lot of Stephen King vibes to it.

As for Vuong, this sums up how I feared it was going to be: "This language is not poetic, but ridiculous, sententious, blinded by self-love and pirouetting over a chasm." I don't think I'll be finishing this one. I may not even start it, given what else is on the list.
