Enjoyed your explanation of starred reviews. Makes sense. I'm not a big fan of this kind of rating system, though. I think it forces you into thinking that there are only 5 types of books in the world. It's also somewhat impersonal. I liked your arguments though :-)
There are definitely pros and cons to ratings, but I think it's important not to pay too much attention to them. Many of my favorite movies have mediocre ratings on IMDB and/or Rotten Tomatoes, while I don't care for many of the top-rated ones: that doesn't say as much about the quality of the movies themselves as about my alignment with popular taste.
